One of hockey's most feared enforcers reveals his off-ice battle with alcohol and heroin. With a foreword by Serge Savard.
Chris Nilan, who grew up in the blue-collar Irish neighbourhood of West Roxbury in Boston, was an intimidating player for the Montreal Canadiens, Boston Bruins and the New York Rangers, and a Stanley Cup champion never afraid to go into the corners or take off his gloves. He was a valued teammate whose very presence on the ice affected the way the game was played. As a Montreal Canadien, the 231st overall pick in the 1978 draft played a key role on a team that featured all-time Hab greats Guy Lafleur, Guy Carbonneau and Larry Robinson, among many others. Always a colourful character, Nilan was married for many years to the daughter of the long-time girlfriend of Whitey Bulger, among the most notorious, ruthless and murderous gangsters in American history. Almost all of his fellow Habs attended the wedding.
As an enforcer and as a teammate, Nilan ranks among the greatest of all time. When the cheering stopped, however, he did not do well. The same qualities-his aggressiveness and high-emotion style-that proved so valuable on the ice did not benefit him when his career ended. He turned to drugs and alcohol to dull his pain, and he nearly died from a heroin overdose.
Nilan's story is a fascinating and troubling expose of the booze and drugs that destroy so many athletes after their time in the limelight is over. But it's also a story of triumph, as Nilan has become the victor in the fight against his demons. Fighting Back is a riveting, no-holds-barred look at a hard life, on the ice and off.

Chris Nilan entertained thousands of hockey fans over his entire career and was very successful.unfortunately he made some very bad decisions that only he can explain why The book was a great read And I can only hope that he remains sober and rebounds a real champion in the game of life. Many of our hockey enforcers have exited the game and turned to drugs and alcohol.although I support fighting in hockey I firmly believe that there is evidence in the need for the NHL to continue to watch over these individuals at the end of your careers. Numerous hockey enforcers who have left the game have similar stories which in my opinion leaves a black eye for the league.Pk

I really enjoyed this book. Great to see Nilan get his life back on track. A must for hockey fans
this book was just plain aewsome,Nilan pulls no punches(no pun intended) he's honest with everything he talks about, from his fame, to addiction, to sobriety. i highly recommended this book, you won't be disappointed.
Great bio by a too often underrated player. Glad Mr. Nilan has his life back on track!
Well-told story of a guy from a hardscrabble background who made it to the pinnacle of his profession, and stayed there for longer than he should have been expected to be able to. I enjoyed the book.
Great read - finished in 2 days. Very honest portrayal of growing up in Boston and in the NHL. Great read even if you are not a hockey fan. As someone who grew up a mile from Chris and loved the game it is even better. Chris discusses the code of fighters in hockey and a similar one outside the game, namely he didn't fight anyone who didn't want to fight or who was a bully. I found his discussion of his post professional hockey career and how it spiraled out of control interesting as well. Recommended to many friends already.
An absolutely awesome and honest account of the life and career of an individual who aspired to be, and succeeding on being, more than just an enforcer. I would also greatly recommend watching "The Last Gladiators."
Being a city kid from Boston and the same age as Chris, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the story that Chris told. I recommend it for everyone based on the life lessons told and the courage and tenacity in over coming obstacles and challenges and getting back up and fighting through when knocked down. Only wish we had drafted Chris as a "B" vs the dreaded HABS. I also wish he had the opportunity to coach the providence "B's" to extend his stay with the Bruins. But knowing Chris's story and struggles he is probably better off residing in Montreal. Great book Knuckles, thanks for sharing your story and for telling it like it was and not pulling any punches.
