The GORE Score A Review Guide to All Things Zombie Volume 1 edition by Tony Schaab Crafts Hobbies Home eBooks
Over the past fifteen years or so, there has been a proliferation of zombie-related media. What used to be a quaint subgenre of horror beloved by only a select few has become a mainstream phenomenon, complete with big-budget Hollywood remakes and weekly television shows on major cable networks. Author Tony Schaab's love for zombies is apparent, and he makes his expectations and criteria for judgment crystal clear in the prologue. He has a unique comic voice, and it shines through in his writing. In this book, he reviews several zombie-themed films, television episodes, novels, video games, and even a concept album. There are two great things about Schaab's book. First, his scoring criteria. The title "The G.O.R.E. Score" actually tells you the four categories that he's judging: (G)eneral Entertainment, (O)riginality, (R)ealism, and (E)ffects/editing (as well as an overall score). What seems like a gimmick at first is actually really useful for helping different readers separate what they really care about in a film. There are indices in the back of the book that sort all of the reviews by each category. Are you the type of viewer who likes zombie films, but you're bothered by shoddy and unrealistic special effects? Look for films with high (R) and (E) scores. Do you want to watch something that defies the well-worn conventions of the genre? Look for the highest (O) scores.
The other great thing is that Schaab -- much like the greatest zombie movies -- doesn't take himself TOO seriously. His voice comes across as the witty guy you'd love to watch one of these films with. It's the type of book that takes away (R)ealism points in Idle Hands because Jessica Alba was way too hot for Devon Sawa.
I'm pretty well versed in the genre myself, and this book turned me on to a couple of movies that weren't on my radar (like Dead & Breakfast). It's definitely a good value, and I highly recommend it.

The GORE Score A Review Guide to All Things Zombie Volume 1 edition by Tony Schaab Crafts Hobbies Home eBooks Reviews
Being a novice follower of Zombie culture, I was at first skeptical of Schaab's opinions and book. After reading only two reviews I had to admit that I was wrong. Schaab's methodical evaluations of Zombie fictions is informational and on point. Schaab is more than a zombie lover, he's a zombie loving writer.
Schaab is able to share poignant and honest insights into what makes the work great... and sometimes not so great. As I continued reading through the book I found myself either strongly agreeing with the reviews I was familiar with, or strongly convinced one way or the other what was worth reading, viewing or listening to. Regardless of the quality of reviewed material, I always found myself entertained.
Schaab's references range from Bill Shatner to Adam Douglas, not to mention the plethora that I'm sure missed me completely. These sporadic interjections pulled me in and helped me relate to this zombie sect of pop cultural I would otherwise be naive to.
Perhaps Schaab has family among the infected or maybe its a simple case of necrophilia, but his writings easily convey his passion and compassion for the undead.
Excellent read. The author knows his genre (sub-genre). Informative, well-written and (very) witty. One request is an expanded gaming section (and less emphasis on the Wii - in my opinion, not the best of the consoles for reviews...suggest revisiting some of the titles - and adding others - from the XB360 and PS3). That said, highly recommended...cannot wait to read the next volume - and future installments. Also hoping the next editions cover even more current fare (especially from movies, TV and gaming)
I have written quite a few reviews on . Most of those reviews have been of zombie related books. I have tried my best to be both detailed and honest, giving the reader an honest overview of the content of a book without (hopefully) giving away too much of the plot or providing spoilers that would take away from their enjoyment of the book. I have done all this because I love the zombie genre and appreciate both the good and the bad when it comes to zombie fiction. Originally, I just started pounding away on my keyboard without any consideration for a larger zombie "community" out there, some of which can be found here on in the Community section-people who are like minded, sharing their thoughts on books, movies, games, and any other zombie related...stuff. Naive as it may sound, I hadn't popped around the web looking for websites created for and by people who have this addiction to the rotting buggers. As time went on and I got to know some of the authors and other folks in the community, I started to discover a group of folks who actually have websites dedicated to zombie...stuff, and in particular, reviewing zombie stuff. That is how I stumbled upon Tony Schaab's website and his very unique and creative scoring system for all things zombie.
Tony has done a bang up job with creating a system (G.O.R.E. stands for General Entertainment, Original Content, Realism, and Effects and editing) that gives you a thoroughly detailed guide when it comes to zombie...stuff.
Now I will admit that I am happy to receive a few favorable votes here on for my reviews. When I get a comment now and again about someone saying they appreciate my effort to give them a fair overview of a book. So I say this with all sincerity The GORE Score puts my reviews to shame, hands down. Tony not only gives his opinions, which are based on a strong appreciate of zombie lore, but does his research so that he can provide little tidbits and details on a particular book/movie/etc, that he is reviewing. It's not only about the score, but about what the product has to offer, and what it will mean to the zombie aficionado. Now understand that his reviews are straight from the perspective of someone who is in love with the undead (and not in pervy sort of way), so while most of the reviews are of zombie-centric products, he does take a swipe at a few things where zombies are not the central figures.
I think the bottom line with any book that claims to be a source for review material of a particular topic is whether or not you find the reviews intriguing enough to take a look at a product you either had no intention of acquiring or gives you some more hesitation on a product that you were certain that you would like, but after reading the review you realize it may have been a waste of money. I think the GORE Score does this quite well, as there are several books, movies and even a piece of music that I am going to be checking out after reading this compilation that would have never crossed my mind before. Tony Schaab is articulate, funny, and gives you the lowdown in an easy to read and understand format. Good stuff for all the zombie lovers out there.
